Recently you might have seen ads for various dental insurance policies on TV or the net and its easy to get very confused on what best for you.
Simply put there are 2 factors to consider when purchasing any dental insurance .
Your overall dental health
Benefit to Cost
Your overall dental health is fairly easy to determine
Good - You see your dentist at least once a year for routine exams and cleaning. You're cavity free and never had any issues with your teeth .
Unsure - You haven't gone to a dentist in years , and/or you might have tooth sensitivity (cold or hot), gum bleeding, bottom line, you're really not sure but there may or may not be minor issues (ie heavy cleaning, cavity , filling replacement ).
Bad - Severe pain, loss of tooth indicates there is something major to be addressed; dentures.extractions, root canals or orthodontics(braces).
Benefit to Cost is the savings (benefit) received from an insurance investment (policy premium).
For example if you need major work done where the price is in the thousands and your annual premium is 600.00 the benefit to cost is calculated as follows ;
Full Dentures ( including extractions etc) 1500.00
Paid from Insurance 1200.00 Personally Responsible for 300.00
Your Costs
Policy Premium 600.00
What your responsible for 300.00
Total Costs 900.00
Benefit to Cost Ratio = 1500.00/900.00
The insurer's (in the example above) outlay of 900.00 as opposed to paying the actual price of 1500.00 results in a savings(benefit) of 400.00.
Plans range to fit the needs of each patient . (Now here comes the shameless plug !) I represent 3 different plans which meet most needs.
As stated above your dental health will basically determine which policy is right for you.
If your teeth are in good shape and all you need are routine exams ,xrays and cleanings, BlueDental Care FI315 from
is a great choice as its price point under 20,00 a month, no deductibles, and no annual maximum.
If you need a bit of work done (cavities, heavy cleaning etc) and are planing to spend a specific yearly amount and want to choose from a wide variety of dentists . The plans from Brightidea Dental
might be a better fit .
Finally if you fall into the bad category and need some serious work done DeltaCare USA HMO thru
would be a good choice for price and predictable charges as it comprehensive coverage make it a great choice for someone with a lot of work to be done.
Obviously this is a lot to digest and If anyone has any other suggestions please do comment below, we're always open to new ideas Of course if you would like to discuss these plans in more detail please don't hesitate to comment as well.
